The boots they were walking over terrain unknown
Some of the people shouted "Just go home"
Others they greeted them as friends from afar
But the soldier had to always be on his guard
This land he was walking he knew it from books
He saw on the news the lives it had took
But still he had signed on the books of his force
Not for glory or medals he thought
He knew the job had risks that was true
He knew some thought he was just a fool
He didn't join to fight or to kill
He didn't join to make people bend to his will
He had said final goodbyes to mates who had gone
He had seen some being placed in the ground
He knew in heart that he could be next
But he still did his job to his very best
He wanted to make a difference you see
He wanted all people to live and be free
So next time you see a soldier please don't abuse
They're the ones keeping freedom for me and and you
Just thank them quietly and let them be
For if it wasn't for them we wouldn't be free.
